Vision is very important to all people because without it we cannot be able to see the beauty of the earth and more than that we would surely have the difficulty in doing important things that we need to do in our daily lives, but how about to those that are born visually impaired and have met some accidents that causes them to be visually impaired one? Does it mean they cannot be able to do anything? We’ll to some they get used to this situation but technologies are still helping them do more than what they think they can. For the past we have seen devices that can be of help to the visually impaired individual such as the UltraCane and EYE 21 system. These are both uses the combination of sonar and audio feedback to let the user see the surroundings through the senses of touch and hearing. Aside from these devices, there also comes the Tacit, it is also a device that uses sonar that will measure the distance of the object and provide the user to have the view of the surrounding through a haptic feedback. What make the Tacit different is that it is mounted on the wrist so that that it will not impair the user’s hearing.

Tacit is developed by Steve Hoefer at Grathio Labs consist of four ultrasonic range. This finds the sensors connected to a microcontroller that will calculate the distance to the objects by reading for time for the ultrasonic pulses to returns to the device. The distance will then be translated into force feedback at the back of the user wrist through servo motors. By waving the user’s arm around an area the wearer can move freely of the land and can move complex environments. With the help of Tacit those visually impaired one can have the chance to move freely without having the feeling of insecurity.
